A Peek Inside The Room Two

Posted on October 3, 2013 by Gazimoff

IMG_0103

When it first launched, The Room caught me by surprise. As the debut title of an unknown studio, the carefully paced puzzle game brought a fresh experience to the iPad. But there was something more to it: an intricate tale of arcane mysticism that refused to be fully unmasked.

Since then, Fireproof Games’ initial offering has made it to both iPhone and Android, and I’d strongly recommend it. Meanwhile, I’ve been desperately craving a sequel. The original took me deep into a rabbit hole, but left me with a collection of questions about the world I’d fallen into. With a sequel on the horizon, I was eagerly anticipating some answers.

PlayStation 4: A Console for MMO Gamers?

Posted on October 3, 2013 by Gazimoff

About 5 months ago, I made the decision to preorder a PlayStation 4. Some of you might see that as a bold or brave choice, while others might think that it’s ridiculous or short-sighted. A few might even wonder why, as a heavy-PC gamer with a powerful gaming rig, I’m getting a console at all.

The truth is, I’ve been eyeing up the next generation of consoles for some time now. The graphical grunt and online capabilities of each machine feel like they’re getting good enough to deliver some incredibly rich experiences. Take one look at titles like Titanfall, Destiny, The Division and Dying Light, and it’s clear that the concept of multiplayer gaming is changing. With flexible grouping systems and an open-world feel, they’re beginning to borrow from the MMO playbook.

Competition: Win a Mini Mister Sparkles!

Posted on October 1, 2013 by Gazimoff

mister sparkles competition copyMister Sparkles. According to Zojja, he’s the best golem in all Rata Sum. He also has a rather interesting history, even before his adventures in Guild Wars 2.

And now he can be yours. Well, at least a miniature version of him. On my recent travels to gaming expos far and wide, I’ve picked up a couple of code cards for a Mini Mister Sparkles. But I don’t want to keep these for myself – instead, I’d like to share them with those who aren’t so fortunate.

As you can see, I have two codes. But only one will be given away in this competition. You see, I’ve been wracking my brains, trying to think of an ingenious way to provide a challenge worthy of an Asura. After discarding all manner of puzzles, quizzes and tests of wit, I was hit with inspiration.

UPDATE: Did I say two codes? I meant to say ten! The kind folks at ArenaNet spotted my little giveaway and sent over eight more codes to share with everyone. This means that I’ll be giving away five codes in total for this first phase of the competition, and five more in the second phase later this month.

To win a Mister Sparkles Mini, your task is simple: come up with a competition for giving away a Mister Sparkles Mini.

The winning answer will be chosen by me, and used as the basis for a second competition for the second code.

It means everyone gets two chances to win (apart from the first winner – not even Zojja has two Mister Sparkles!), and the entire contest is deliciously meta. I think Snaff himself might approve.

To enter, post a comment below with your idea. Be sure to include a valid email address so I can contact you if you win! And get your thinking caps on, as the first competition closes on 11th October 2013. And if you have any questions, just drop me a mail: gazimoff[at]manaobscura.com.

FURTHER UPDATE: The first part of the competition is now closed! I’ll be picking winners over the weekend and be back on Monday to reveal all! And if you’re not lucky this time around, I’ll be starting the second part of this competition next week.

FURTHER FURTHER UPDATE: The Winners can be found here!

WildStar: The Combat Special Sauce

Posted on September 26, 2013 by Gazimoff

How do you make a combat sandwich? For Carbine, you start off with some freshly baked Movement bread, add a couple of slices of Aiming meat and some delicious Crowd Control cheese. But a signature dish isn’t complete without special sauce, and in WildStar that’s Ability Mechanics.

Although it’s still an MMO sandwich, it’s vital that it tastes different to a Warcraft, or Rift one. The simple reason comes down to what makes games fun to play from a purely mechanical point of view.

WildStar: Ship Shape with Shiphands

Posted on September 25, 2013 by Gazimoff

Shiphand_05If you think that dungeons and raids are the only instances you’ll find in WildStar, prepare to be corrected. A few weeks ago, WildStar content designer and zone lead Kristen “Caydiem” DeMeza posted on the WildStar Central forums about a previously unknown form of content. Described as quick experiences for 1 to 5 players, ‘Shiphand Missions’ take you off-planet and somewhere else entirely.

Today’s WildStar Wednesday brings a cargo hold full of info about Shiphand Missions, with DeMeza going into much more detail about how the concept came about. Starting off with how “terrible things happen aboard spaceships,” the post conjures up images from all of those sci-fi movies and TV shows that make an essential part of our pop culture diet.

A Ticket to Los Santos

gtaVthanks

If there’s one videogame that’s demanded attention recently, it’s Grand Theft Auto V. Whether you love Rockstar’s exploration of the criminal underworld, or loathe the fictional world they created, it’s undeniably been the catalyst for a massive amount of opinion. Whether you’re interested in game design, interactive narrative or just games as art, GTA V has a huge amount to offer.

Unfortunately, if you’ve been reading the blog lately, things have been a little tight around Gaz Towers. I was expecting Grand Theft Auto V to be something I’d miss out on, eventually picking it up in the bargain bin some six months down the line.

Luckily, the very kind folks over at MusicMagpie offered to send me a copy free of charge, allowing me to get playing and start joining in with those discussions. Courtesy of them, I’ll be able to share my thoughts on the game very soon.

It’s not every day you get mailed a ticket to some exotic location, and I can’t wait to get started. Huge thanks to MusicMagpie for helping me in my time of need!

Crafting and CREDD

Posted on September 16, 2013 by Gazimoff

WS_Settler_Scientist07Have you ever heard of the tale about the everlasting fan belt? The story starts with a small inventor who became frustrated at high garage bills for maintaining his car. Every time he visited for a seemingly minor problem, the sparkplugs or fan belt needed replacing. After one expensive visit too many, he decided enough was enough and worked on fixing the problem once and for all.

After a few years, the young inventor perfected an item that would revolutionise the car maintenance industry – an indestructible fan belt. He secured a patent on it, and began to tout the idea with various car makers the world over.

The inventor found a buyer, so the myth says, and rewarded him handsomely. But the belt never made it to market. Sensing what it would do to the lucrative car maintenance industry, the buyer (who owned a chain of garages) never sold a single belt using the patent. Instead, he continued to profit from the built-in obsolescence, guaranteeing a steady stream of regular customers.

How does this relate to MMOs? Let me explain.

Powering a Million Idiot March

Posted on September 11, 2013 by Gazimoff

Raiding is serious business. For the hardcore guilds at the bleeding edge they’re an all-consuming endeavour. But what if, every month or so, they became a chaotic lemming-fest? That’s the thought behind WildStar’s Million Idiot March, a ‘special weekend’ idea currently being kicked around.

When I interviewed Carbine executive producer Jeremy Gaffney, the idea sounded simple enough. Lift the entry cap, let people zerg their way through, and maybe get their hands on some loot. There are no promises though, and the ‘tough as nails’ philosophy will probably mean more carnage than celebration.

Unfortunately, nothing is ever quite that simple. Although it sounds like a great idea (and there’s certainly a ton of support for it), there’re actually a fair few technical challenges to leap through. And that’s before anyone’s worked out if a mode that sounds fun on paper is actually great to play in practice. That said, if Carbine pull it off, it’ll be awesome.

Fork in the Road

Posted on September 10, 2013 by Gazimoff

Some big changes are afoot. After nearly two years of writing features, conducting interviews and reporting news, I’m leaving ZAM at the end of the week. There are a handful of interviews from Gamescom to wrap up beforehand though, so keep your eyes peeled for them!

So what gives?

Writing professionally about video games has always been a hobby for me. It’s meant some incredible things – I’ve travelled to places I never thought I’d visit, met and interviewed some incredibly talented people from the MMO scene (including some personal heroes), and had the privilege to share it all with a global audience. I wouldn’t trade those experiences for any riches you could offer.

Unfortunately, it was also part-funded by a day job. During the daylight hours, I’d design new products and services for the mobile/cellphone market at a leading telco here in the UK. I’d start with an idea, then lead a team through building, testing and launching it to millions of customers. I’d worked on things like remote device management, cloud-based support platforms, and integrated sales systems.

It meant that during the daylight hours, I’d be toiling away on some kind of massively multi-user online system, then come home at night and write about massively multiplayer online games. Working on one helped to understand the other – a gamer-centric and customer-centric mindset are very similar.

At the end of this month, I’m being made redundant from that day job. It’s not the end of the world, but it does mean I need to focus heavily on finding a new one. In order to get the time I need to do this, I’ve also taken a step back from ZAM. I will occasionally still write here and there – I enjoy it immensely and find it hugely rewarding – but my main focus is going to be on finding a new job.

So, want to help me with the job hunt? Excellent! If you’ve got any leads, suggestions or advice then please let me know! I’m based in southern UK, but I’m open to the idea of travel.

  • I’ve got a general portfolio/résumé site up at Gazimoff.com, where you can find out more.
  • You can find me on LinkedIn here.
  • I can be reached by email at me@gazimoff.com
  • Or you can ping me on Skype at Gazimoff (please include some details when you add)

At the moment, nothing is off the table. Roles similar to what I’m doing at the moment, the occasional freelance gig and so on would be great. Heck, I’d even consider working on developing games themselves if the right opportunity came up.

Finally, thank you all for your support. To everyone who’s read and enjoyed an article of mine, to ZAM for giving me the opportunity in the first place, and to every developer and industry insider that I’ve worked with, it has been both a pleasure and an honour. Fingers crossed, our paths will cross again sometime soon.

Marking Cards: A First Look at Hearthstone

Posted on September 8, 2013 by Gazimoff

Hearthstone Announcement Art

When I was a kid, I used to play Magic: The Gathering. Every weekend, dad would drive my brother and I to a local tournament, where we’d duel other players from across the county. Sometimes I’d do well, sometimes I’d be weeping into my deck, but I’d constantly be collecting cards and refining strategies.

That is, until the Pokemon trading card game came along. With their gym badges and cartoon froth, a wave of unwashed children ravaged the reserved sanctum of our tournament grounds. At that point, I decided I was too old for that car-crash and stowed my cards for good.

And yes, I still have a chip on my shoulder about Pokemon.

With Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment have managed to do something rather clever; create a game that taps into all those retro memories, yet presented with all of the slick polish that the Irvine developer is known for.
